- A city that maintains, enhances and promotes the natural beauty and diversity of its waterways and
- bushlands.

We must not forget the increased noise pollution from Bankstown Airport both late at night and in the pre-dawn hours. This is an issue adversely affecting the sleeping habits of Bankstown residents in Condell Park and Georges Hall in particular.
Comment 1.1 6 Jul 2010, 8:02 PM
Bankstown Airport should be expanded and have passenger operations in a well managed way to add value to the local economy.
Comment 1.2 7 Jul 2010, 2:51 PM
It's quite obvious that you do not live anywhere near the airport, Caml2f.
Comment 1.2.1 7 Jul 2010, 4:51 PM
I do, however I do think the airport should be maintained and grow. However, this can be achieved in a sustainable and low impact way - such as introducing curfews between 11pm and 6am and providing shuttle buses for any passengers between the airport and the Bankstown City Centre.
Comment 1.2.1.1 7 Jul 2010, 5:35 PM
Now we're on the same page. Reinstate the curfew should be the first move, but it will have to be enforced. Some mornings the warm-ups and takeoffs start at around 3.45am.
Comment 1.2.1.2 26 Jul 2010, 1:09 PM
The only thing I agree with is maintaining the airport to reach a high level of efficiency for those who must land in Bankstown.
Comment 1.2.1.2.1 10 Sep 2010, 11:31 AM
And it would be a good thing if passenger flights could be a part of this - bringing people to Bankstown and Western Sydney in general, and providing a boost to local hotels and hospitality industries.

We MUST not approve new housing applications along the Georges River. The natural wetlands and beauty of the river needs to be protected from development and greedy developers.
Comment 2.1 6 Jul 2010, 8:06 PM
Development controls for development along Georges River should require high standards of environmentally sensitive design, light weight construction etc. Example of such development: Murrays Beach NSW
Comment 2.2 11 Jul 2010, 4:41 AM
Riverdog, you are exactly right. We have moved past the point of reasonable development, we are way past sustainability, it has to stop sometime, far better to stop now before more stress is put on our precious bushlands. Far better, in fact, to get some rezoning in there and extend buffers for bushcare, endangered species habitat, and regeneration.
Comment 3 7 Jul 2010, 12:19 AM
More should be done to connect the city with the river. Council should consider working with adjoining Councils and the State Government to provide a commuter ferry service along the Georges River.
Comment 3.1 12 Jul 2010, 9:48 PM
A ferry service will only contribute to polluting our River and impact on river wildlife.
Comment 3.1.1 13 Jul 2010, 9:01 AM
I don't think the pollution from a ferry service is relatively very high. I think it will enhance the connection between bankstown, Liverpool and the Sutherland LGAs.
Comment 4 7 Jul 2010, 12:53 PM
Encourage residents to lower their ecological footprint. E.g:
Discourage green waste collection by handing out free compost bins (lower collection cost and associated carbon emissions). Recycling non-organic waste should only have third priority (refuse, reuse, recycle). Provide information and classes on growing fruit and vegetables (lower food miles and better human health). Promote Green Choice power and use it in all council building. Use electric council cars as examples for the wider population.
Comment 4.1 12 Jul 2010, 9:52 PM
Our children are the foundation blocks to living sustainably and yet schools and organisations such as Scouts & Girl Guides are NOT provided with recycling bins because they are not ratepayers. Surely providing a green bin promotes and encourages positive recyclng practices?
Comment 5 12 Jul 2010, 9:57 PM
Currently we have two community gardens. Let's promote a sense of community, fresh produce and a connection to the environment by establishing more community gardens.
Comment 6 23 Jul 2010, 1:29 PM
"# A city that maintains, enhances and promotes the natural beauty and diversity of its waterways and bushlands" should be the first goal under this City Direction. The concept of protection and preservation is a notable omission.
Bankstown has a beautiful natural heritage that must be protected. We need to engender a better sense of the importance of the local environment among the community and encourage them to play a role in its future.

The library should be brought into the 21st century urgently. It wastes a lot of paper and energy by sending out messages by mail rather than email. It also wastes time by not providing adequate functionality online, such as reserving items.
Comment 8 12 Sep 2010, 11:55 AM
Noise pollution from garbage collection in the middle of the night is a serious issue for residents' health. Why can't collection happen during the day, when there are fewer cars parked along suburban kerbs, making the process more efficient and wasting less energy.
